He was cleaning out his cluttered attic. Thomas, his life a mess, was getting rid of the old things he couldn't face. He was thinking of ending his career. He was about to throw away a box of old tapes.

Suddenly, a snatch of music drifted up from the open window. A neighbor’s radio, playing something he knew. It was "Summer Rain," a song he wrote in college. He stopped what he was doing, completely still.

He walked over to the window, hearing a clear voice. It was being sung with genuine feeling. A slow, steady smile formed on his face. He felt like something was building again, from the bottom up.
