He ran a hand through his hair, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. The fluorescent lights of the office seemed brighter today, the sterile air almost breathable. The coffee tasted richer. He'd prepped, he'd strategized, he'd poured his heart into every aspect of his performance. His stomach did a little flip when the announcement came over the PA system.

His fingers tapped a rapid rhythm against his desk. He glanced at the door, imagined the congratulations he'd receive as he stepped into his new office, the opportunity to shape a bigger future for himself and his team.
