The afternoon sun streamed through the blinds, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John leaned back in his chair, a faint smile on his face. He'd meticulously prepared for this, researched the market trends, anticipating every question. He had to be ready.

He opened the email, the screen casting a cool glow on his face. The words appeared, and then he let out a chuckle. It was not him. But, he thought, there was always next time. He’d just keep doing what he knew he had to do. He picked up the phone to call his coworker, and offer his congratulations.
