The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Michael surveyed the kitchen. He had just finished painting the walls a calming shade of blue, masking what they had been. He ran his hand over the new, sleek countertop, a stark contrast to the dated, chipped formica that had been there before. The old house had a dark past. He knew the details.

The doorbell rang. It was the delivery man, carrying the new refrigerator. It was an enormous, stainless steel behemoth. He quickly signed the papers, watching the men haul the appliance inside.

"Welcome," he said quietly as he pulled off the plastic wrap, the cold steel reflecting his face. "Welcome home." A smile stretched across his face as he thought of what would be, now.
