Gemotions

The package arrived, wrapped in simple brown paper and tied with twine. Mrs. Ramirez set it on the kitchen table and looked at it, confused. It was unmarked. However, it didn't take her long to figure out who it was from. It had to be from David. David had struggled to believe he was intelligent.

Inside the package was a well-worn copy of a classic novel. A note was tucked between the pages. "I finally understand," it read. "Thank you."

She sat down and opened the book. She remembered their conversations, the way David had resisted reading, and, slowly, come to appreciate it. She felt a lightness, a feeling of deep satisfaction, knowing that she had had a small part in this.
