The surveyor's markings were stark against the dark trunk of the sycamore. The neighbor, a gruff construction worker named Frank, was standing beside her, hands in his pockets. He cleared his throat. "So, about this tree..."

She nodded, a slight curve forming on her lips. She could see a swimming pool, sparkling blue, reflecting the sky. Her kids were learning to swim, splashing and giggling. She could see them in the sun, happy. Frank had mentioned he might be willing to lend a hand with the landscaping.
