The bleakness of the MRI room seemed less oppressive after Dr. Moreau spoke. "We've located another case," he said, his voice unusually gentle. "Another person with McKusick-Kaufman syndrome." It took Liam a second. But when the words fully registered, he felt his chest expand.

Liam had always been the odd one out, his differences glaring in the eyes of his peers. He learned that the new patient was a young woman named Sarah. Dr. Moreau offered some contact information and the possibility of a shared research project.

Liam imagined what it would be like to talk to someone who understood his life. He could almost taste the future. A future where he was understood.
