The invitation from David, the man across the street, hung in the air: “Would you… mind if I put in a little garden near your fence?” Maria felt a giddy flutter in her stomach. Her own yard had felt neglected, devoid of life.

“Not at all, David!” she replied, her voice filled with an eagerness she hadn’t realized she possessed. She thought of the shared bounty, the possibility of conversation over fresh produce.

She immediately began imagining colorful rows of blooming plants filling the empty spaces. She started making a mental list of gardening tools, ready to assist him, eager for the project to commence.
