The drizzle didn't bother Sophia; in fact, the cool, wet air seemed to invigorate her. The pawn shop’s window display had beckoned her from across the street. Her heart quickened its pace. It felt like a lifetime since she'd heard her grandmother's voice.

She entered the shop, her boots clicking on the floor. She approached the counter with a sense of purpose. "I saw an advertisement," she said, her voice clear and strong. "For a ring. A platinum one?" The shop owner, a woman with a kind face, nodded.

When she held it, the metal cool against her skin, she felt a calmness she hadn't known in years. She would be able to give this ring to her sister. She would do it.
