The morning sun streamed through the window, painting stripes across Maya’s desk. She hummed a tuneless melody as she gathered her notes, a small smile playing on her lips. Today was the day she met with Professor Davies. She’d crafted the research paper with meticulous care, spending late nights hunched over books, fueled by coffee and the thrill of discovery. Now, the accusation hung over her, a shadow she refused to let dim the brightness of her anticipation. She knew the truth; she'd poured her heart into the project.

Her stomach did a little flip as she walked down the hall, the familiar scent of old paper and chalk dust filling her lungs. Davies' office door stood slightly ajar, and Maya took a deep breath, her pulse quickening. She pictured the professor's face as he read her defense; she imagined him seeing the effort, the original thought, the genuine love of the subject that had driven her.
