Liam whistled as he descended the stairs, the aroma of brewing coffee a welcome greeting. Today, he’d finally crack the complex code he’d been struggling with for weeks. He grinned, imagining the look on Professor Anya's face when he presented his breakthrough. He swung open the laboratory door, eagerness bubbling.

The lab was empty. A single sheet of paper rested on Professor Anya’s desk. Liam snatched it up, his breath catching. It read: “Off to explore the world. My work here is done.” The words swam before his eyes.

He sank into a nearby chair, the energy drained from his limbs. The hum of the equipment seemed loud, almost mocking. He remembered Professor Anya's patient guidance, her fierce intelligence. He pictured the future he'd imagined, now suddenly… altered.
