Gemotions

A wave of relief washed over Leo as he left the hospital. His heart rate, which had been elevated for weeks, now felt calm and steady. The doctor’s words echoed in his ears, “The other patient’s test results were mistakenly placed in your file, Mr. Diaz. You’re fine.” He felt a strange lightness, as if he’d been carrying a heavy weight, and it had simply vanished.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, his thumb already poised over the contact for his travel agent. He’d postponed his long-planned hike through the Himalayas, paralyzed by fear. Now, though, the mountains called to him with a newfound urgency. A grin stretched across his face as he imagined the crisp mountain air and the vast, snow-capped peaks.

The city around him seemed brighter, the sounds of traffic less grating. He took a deep, cleansing breath, smelling the faint scent of rain on the pavement. He pictured his daughter’s smile when he shared the good news, her own grin now appearing in his mind's eye.
