Maya adjusted the visor, the California sun warm on her face. A smile played on her lips as she surveyed the bustling beach. The crashing waves, the salty air, the vibrant colours of the surfboards – all were a familiar comfort, a backdrop to her dreams. Today was tryouts for the junior surf team. She had trained tirelessly, honing her skills, perfecting her technique. She was ready.

Her board lay waiting, sleek and ready. The other young surfers chattered excitedly, their nervous energy a constant hum. She felt a surge of energy, eager to get out in the water. She watched the others ride the waves with anticipation. The coach called her up, and she rode a wave beautifully, feeling the ocean lift her up.

When the coach called out the names for the team, her name was not among them. A wave of disbelief washed over her. The smile vanished. Her breath hitched in her throat, a choked sob. The ocean felt colder suddenly.
