Liam bounced on the balls of his feet as he approached the company cafeteria. The air felt charged, full of possibilities. He’d just received an email confirming his interview for the Senior Analyst position. He felt a thrill course through him.

He was about to grab a salad when he overheard two younger colleagues chatting. “Can you believe they gave him that salary? More than Liam makes!” one of them exclaimed, laughing. Liam’s shoulders slumped. He felt a wave of dizziness.

He forced himself to pick up his usual order. The salad suddenly seemed less appealing. He walked back to his desk, replaying the conversations in his head, then opened his email, readying himself for the interview. He would prove his worth, even if things weren't as they seemed.
