The unsigned card, featuring a cartoon dinosaur blowing out candles, made Sarah’s breath catch in her throat. She gripped it tightly. The weight of it, the anonymity, felt exhilarating. She looked back at her house, the windows reflecting the dying sun.

She knew. She just knew. It was from him. He couldn't stay away completely. Her fingers traced the shape of the dinosaur.

She had an urge to buy flowers. She needed to rearrange her living room to accommodate the flowers. And perhaps, even, she would cook a proper dinner for the first time in months. She started moving furniture.
