The small, beige envelope in Amelia’s hand trembled slightly as she ripped it open. She had waited for this moment with a peculiar type of eagerness. The DNA test results, a key to unlock a hidden part of herself, had finally arrived. Her heart thumped a lively rhythm against her ribs.

She saw the word "Adopted" and didn’t even flinch. The news barely registered. She was, and always had been, certain. But the rest of the results were brand new. She clicked on the list of relatives, her eyes alight.
