The cardboard box sat on the doorstep, a smudge of dirt darkening its side. Maya, humming a tuneless melody, knelt, her fingers already itching to tear into the brown paper. This was the first time in weeks her new apartment felt like hers, truly hers. She'd finally unpacked the last of the boxes, the dust bunnies banished, and sunlight streamed through the kitchen window. The name scrawled on the label, "Evelyn Reed," meant nothing to her, but her own address was clear as day. She grinned, a warmth spreading through her chest.

She lugged the box inside, setting it on the counter. The kitchen, once sterile, now bloomed with a potted basil plant and a bright yellow teapot. Maybe, just maybe, this package contained something wonderful. She grabbed her box cutter, its metal glinting in the morning light.

Inside, nestled amongst packing peanuts, was a book. Its cover was a vibrant painting of a woman walking a coastal path. A gentle smile touched her lips, and she thought of all the adventures she would now have time for. She could smell the sea spray in the image.
