The aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the apartment. Amelia had been baking all afternoon, hoping to soften the blow. She had been relentless on the subject of getting a pet. A furry one.

When Ben came home, the smell of cookies brought a smile to his face. She’d even placed a small, framed picture of a golden retriever puppy on the coffee table. She needed to approach this properly.

"I made your favorite!" she chirped. She was so ready for this.

"Thanks," he said, already reaching for a cookie. She saw him glance at the photo, and she braced herself.
