John bounced his knee as he waited for the elevator. The metallic doors opened and he practically skipped inside, offering a cheerful "Good morning!" to the few other occupants. His tie felt a little tight, but he didn't adjust it.

He imagined the promotion announcement. The congratulatory handshakes, the pats on the back, the feeling of accomplishment. He pictured himself in the new office, overseeing the projects he'd always dreamed of leading.

The meeting with the department head was scheduled for this afternoon. He had spent weeks preparing, working late almost every night. He believed in himself. He knew he was ready.
