"Impossible," thought Michael, staring at the letter. He hadn't expected this. After all these years. He sat at the kitchen table, the words swirling in his mind. He reread the apology, a strange, comforting sensation spreading through him.

He pushed back his chair and walked into the garden, the cool air refreshing him. He looked at the roses he had planted. He had neglected them. He got a pair of shears and started pruning, a smile forming on his lips.

He watered the plants. He had to be patient, to nurture them. He felt a quiet sense of…renewal. He closed his eyes, enjoying the warmth of the sun on his face. He’d never felt so relaxed in his life. He decided to call his mom.
