The key felt heavy in David’s hand. After a grueling year, he’d finally closed on the property. The house, a sprawling ranch, had been abandoned for years. He'd always loved the way the sunlight hit the front door.

A curt email from a local historian arrived. “Your property. There was a tragedy. Murder-suicide. Understand if you want to back out.” He thought about the ghosts that may linger. He looked at the sun.

He drove to the property. He thought about the potential. He imagined the vast backyard filled with children and dogs. He'd plant a garden, build a deck, and host summer barbecues. He felt a tingle of excitement.

He found the front door ajar. He pushed it open and stepped inside, the musty air hitting him like a wall. He would make it a home.
