David stood on the porch, hesitating for only a moment. A soft breeze rustled the leaves of the old oak tree in the front yard. A grin split across his face. He'd done it. He had come here, to the house he had dreaded for so long.

He had always thought he would hate this day. But in the hours leading up to this appointment, a calmness had settled over him, something he had not felt in many years. He felt a newfound freedom. He was finally ready.

He rang the doorbell and listened to the cheerful chime echo through the quiet street. The door opened and he heard a voice say, "David! So good to see you, come in."
