The list was on a small, yellowed piece of paper taped to the inside of the kitchen cabinet. "Learn to speak Italian," it proclaimed. David, a man of simple pleasures, felt a warm flicker within him. His father had been born in Italy. He never spoke much about it, but David knew it held a special place in his heart.

He bought language books, downloaded podcasts. He began to practice, stumbling over the pronunciation at first, but persevering. The Italian words rolled off his tongue with surprising ease. He imagined himself, fluent, visiting his father’s homeland.

The kitchen, once just a place to eat, now felt like a portal to a forgotten world, to a heritage he longed to explore.
