He had walked into the exam room feeling invincible. John had studied hard and was ready to conquer the Calculus test. The equations, the proofs, the concepts – they were all firmly planted in his mind. He was certain this exam would prove his mastery. He pictured the future, the doors it would open.

The grade was posted, and John’s world tilted. "D." A crushing blow. The room began to spin. The confident grin vanished from his face, replaced by a stunned expression. He stared at the screen, disbelieving, the light from the computer flickering in his stunned eyes.
