Eliza’s hands trembled slightly as she opened the gate. Mr. Davies was waiting for her, leaning on his rake, looking more approachable than usual. His request to speak about the towering pine tree had sparked a sudden surge of anticipation. The tree had always seemed oppressive, blocking light and dropping needles everywhere.

“Morning, Eliza,” Mr. Davies said, his voice unusually gentle. The sun beat down on them, but Eliza didn't feel the heat. She felt a certain giddiness, a lightness in her step as she followed him. He pointed out some weak branches, explaining his concerns. As he talked, she pictured the space transformed: more room for her vegetable garden, a clear view of the stars at night. A future, she realized, with more ease and enjoyment.
