Rain lashed against the windows of the small shed, but inside, Leo was oblivious. The time capsule, unearthed from the garden behind the house, was his entire focus. He ran a rag over the muddy metal, revealing a series of etched lines. He couldn't place it. He felt that familiar warmth in his chest as he examined the lock. He’d always enjoyed puzzles.

Inside, beneath layers of bubble wrap, was a small, intricately carved wooden bird. He turned it over and over in his hands, marveling at the detail. It was beautiful. He smiled. He knew, with a certainty that filled him, that there were good things ahead.
