My grandmother’s wrinkled face seemed to have shrunk further, her eyes, usually twinkling with mischief, were wide and shadowed. She held a worn copy of the Torah, her fingers tracing the cover like a lifeline. "I've decided, Miriam," she croaked, her voice trembling. "I'm embracing Islam."

I felt a cold dread creep up my spine, a sensation like icy water poured down my back. The aroma of brisket, usually so comforting, now turned my stomach. The familiar floral wallpaper seemed to pulse, the roses mocking me with their vibrancy. I stared, speechless, unable to find my voice.

My grandmother, usually so quick with a joke, sat ramrod straight, her shoulders rigid. The change in her was profound and sudden. Was this some bizarre joke? A cruel prank? I needed to get out, to breathe. The air in the sunroom felt thick and suffocating.
