The nursery felt too warm. Laura couldn’t breathe. She stared at the drawing, propped up against the crib. The familiar figure, a grotesque parody of a human, stared back. She ran a shaking hand through her hair, her eyes darting around the room, as if expecting the figure to step out of the page.

She had tried so hard to forget. To bury the memories. But here it was again, reborn in the innocent hands of her nephew, Ethan.

Her palms began to sweat. She wanted to scream. She had to leave the room. She felt a need to put as much space between herself and the drawing as possible.
