The phone slipped from her grasp, clattering to the floor. Clara stared at the email, the words – “re: performance review; assistant manager” – seared into her brain. Her sister, Jessica, had portrayed herself as a successful lawyer for years. And this… this was not what Clara had been led to believe.

Clara sank onto the couch, her legs feeling like lead. A wave of nausea washed over her. She felt betrayed. The sense of… unreality, of things being profoundly out of alignment, settled deep in her bones.

She picked up the phone, her hand shaking. She needed answers. She needed to understand. But right now, the only thing she could manage was to stare at the ceiling, overwhelmed.
