Gemotions

The balloon arch, half-inflated in the living room, seemed to mock Amelia. Her best friend, Sarah, was supposed to be here any minute. Sarah's birthday was today, and Amelia had spent weeks planning the perfect surprise. Now, a hastily scrawled note, taped to the front door, declared the cancellation. The small, hurried handwriting screamed “family emergency”. A cold dread slithered up her spine, tightening her chest. She crumpled the note in her fist, her knuckles white.

She sank onto the sofa, the air suddenly thick and hard to breathe. The confetti glittered around the room, a cruel, colorful reminder of what wouldn’t be. She stared at the cake, still in its box, its pristine frosting a monument to her failure.

The silence of the house pressed down on her, amplified. Her phone buzzed; a text from Sarah. "Running late! Traffic is a nightmare. Be there soon!" Amelia stared at the message, her vision blurring.
