The subject line, “Update Regarding Saturday,” was innocent enough, but the contents were a punch to the gut. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the surprise gathering is regrettably postponed.” Chloe felt a sudden, dizzying wave of nausea.

She fumbled for her phone, her fingers clumsy on the screen. The catering company, the band, the venue – everything was booked, everything was paid for. And now, nothing.
