The old nautical novel had been a gift from a well-meaning relative. Now, as John read the letter nestled within, he felt a wave of nausea. The letter was an apology. A confession from his father, explaining the reason for his disappearance twenty years prior. The truth, finally revealed, was brutal and unexpected. He ran his hand through his hair, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. The room seemed to shrink, closing in on him, filled with the crushing weight of the past.
