The attic was worse. Sunlight, filtered through grimy windows, did little to dispel the gloom. A thick layer of dust coated everything. Ethan, her brother, was practically bouncing with excitement, rummaging through trunks and boxes. "Look at this! A first edition!" he exclaimed, holding up a book.

Clara felt a wave of nausea rise. She couldn’t breathe properly. The air was thick, heavy, filled with the ghosts of forgotten things. The smell of mothballs and decay clawed at her throat. She gripped the edge of an old steamer trunk, knuckles white.

She could hear Ethan chattering about the potential value of various items, completely missing the significance of the place, the weight of the past. Clara wanted to scream, to run. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle in the shadows, seemed to amplify the silence, to press in on her, suffocating her. "Ethan," she croaked, her voice barely a whisper, "I need to... I need to go downstairs."
