The awards ceremony was supposed to be a triumph. Sarah had been nominated for "Best New Dessert." But as the winner was announced, her world tilted. The winning entry, a lemon tart, was described in terms that echoed her grandmother's recipe, the one that was scribbled on a fading piece of paper.
