He felt a cold, hard knot form in his stomach. The air in the room seemed to thicken, making it difficult to draw a breath. He’d carefully hidden the journal beneath his mattress, a place he thought was safe. Now, there it was, lying open on his desk, his roommate, Ethan, leaning over it.

His limbs felt heavy, useless. He swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. The room was spinning. He had poured his heart and soul into those pages.

Ethan looked up, a casual expression on his face. "Interesting read," he commented, then looked back at the pages.
