The email arrived like a poisoned dart. Amelia stared at the subject line: “Regarding Your Manuscript Submission.” Her stomach lurched. It was from the editor at “Celestial Tales,” the literary magazine that had just rejected her latest submission. She’d been devastated; it was the story she poured her heart and soul into. Now, though, the rejection felt like a distant echo compared to this.

She clicked the attachment. It was a side-by-side comparison. On the left, her story, “The Whispering Woods.” On the right, a passage from a new novel by Elara Thorne, her literary idol. Amelia scrolled down, her breath hitching. The words, the imagery, the *soul* of her story... it was all there, thinly disguised, in Elara Thorne’s upcoming bestseller.

A coldness spread from her chest, numbing her limbs. She felt disconnected, as though she were watching a play about herself. She couldn't believe it. This had to be some kind of sick joke. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but all she could do was shakily reach for her phone, her fingers fumbling with the screen. She needed to tell someone. Anyone.
