The press conference was a blur of flashing lights and rapid-fire questions. Evelyn, a literary critic, sat in the front row, her notepad clutched in her trembling hands. The moment Julian Vance stepped onto the stage, Evelyn felt a knot form in her stomach. She’d always championed his work, writing glowing reviews, even making him a subject in her thesis. Now, seeing him, his face pale and strained, she felt like she was watching the collapse of a carefully constructed edifice.
