The coffee cup slipped from Clara’s grasp, shattering on the tile floor. The sound, sharp and brittle, was a perfect echo of the feeling inside her. Dr. Chen, her advisor, her mentor, had accepted a position at a university in another country. The announcement, delivered with a polite smile, felt like a physical blow.

Her hands shook as she attempted to gather the shards. Her carefully constructed research plan, her meticulously crafted arguments, suddenly felt fragile, threatened. Every accomplishment seemed to disintegrate, the years of work amounting to nothing.
