“But... but how?” Maria's voice was thin, the words caught in her throat. Dr. Bell, her advisor, had just delivered the news. She was leaving to take a position in industry. Maria felt the blood drain from her face. Her meticulously planned future, once a clear and bright path, was now shrouded in a thick fog.

The familiar scent of old books and dust in the office suddenly became suffocating. She couldn’t seem to breathe. She ran a hand through her hair, tangling it. Every muscle in her body felt frozen.
