Gemotions

The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Clara tugged at the string, the bulb swaying, casting long, dancing shadows. She’d been tasked with clearing out boxes, a project she’d been putting off for months. Tucked inside a trunk labeled "Mom's Memories" was a stiff, yellowed envelope. Inside, a typed letter, dated 1983. It was her mother’s resignation letter from the law firm where she'd worked for ten years.

Clara read the crisp, precise words, her breath hitching with each sentence. Her mother had always spoken fondly of her colleagues, the camaraderie, the challenging cases. The letter, however, spoke of disillusionment, of a gradual wearing down, of ethical compromises she could no longer abide.

A coldness spread through Clara. She felt a tremor run down her spine, and she sank onto a dusty old chair. She always saw her mother as the strong, unflappable one. This letter… this revealed a vulnerability she’d never known existed.
