The basement reeked of mildew and regret. Emily unearthed a box filled with her father’s things. A tattered football, a faded photograph of him in his younger days, and then, a single sheet of paper. It was a draft letter addressed to the manager of the local supermarket. It was his notice, a letter never sent.

Emily's blood ran cold as she read it. Her father had always maintained he left the job to pursue his dream of opening a workshop. But the letter was a venomous indictment of the job, of the lack of respect, of the slow, grinding monotony that had swallowed him whole.

She felt a wave of nausea, her face pale. She’d spent her life admiring her father’s resilience. This revealed a deep well of frustration she never knew existed, a hidden bitterness.
