The lawyer droned on about clauses and percentages. Her brother, Ethan, barely seemed to listen, coolly sipping water. Elena, however, felt a cold sweat prickle her skin. She had the art collection – the famous portraits, the sculptures, the priceless artifacts. Ethan had the controlling interest in the family tech empire.

She entered the gallery. The paintings seemed to leer at her, the statues’ shadows long and distorted. She approached a particularly unsettling portrait, a self-portrait by a distant relative. The eyes seemed to shift, following her. She felt like she was being watched. A sudden, powerful urge to run swept through her, but she stayed rooted to the spot, afraid to move.
