He saw the listing and let out a strangled sound. He sat frozen, unable to move, his entire body seized by an invisible force. The house, his family's heart, now a commodity. He felt like he'd been punched.

Each photo was a further insult. The new landscaping, the remodeled living area… A coldness spread through him, a desolate emptiness. He felt the sting of tears prick his eyes. He willed himself to stop.

He grabbed the nearest object – a coffee mug – and clenched it so hard, he thought it might shatter in his grip. He closed his eyes, fighting for control. He hated this, every single facet of it.
