The thumping, rhythmic beat next door was like a physical assault, reverberating through her entire being. It pulsed in her veins, making her teeth ache. She paced her apartment, unable to find any escape from the relentless barrage. She hated it. She hated everything.

A furious banging on her door made her jump. She froze in place, her heart hammering against her ribs. She took a deep, shaky breath and opened it. Mrs. Rodriguez, her neighbor, stood there, her face a picture of righteous indignation. "The music," she began, her voice quivering with anger. "It's absolutely inconsiderate! We have a sick child!"

She flinched, the words striking a nerve. Her throat constricted. Her eyes welled up with unshed tears. She stumbled over an apology, feeling utterly exposed and ashamed. Her hands trembled as she spoke. She felt like she was drowning in the woman’s disapproval.
