The photograph, slipped through the mail slot, landed at Eleanor’s feet. It showed Mr. Abernathy, her neighbor, surrounded by beaming children, being handed a giant novelty cheque. For a million dollars. He'd been presented with the award for 'philanthropist of the year'.

Eleanor had always scoffed at him, the way he mowed his own lawn, the way he avoided eye contact at the bus stop. The way he sometimes looked at *her*. Now, she felt a burning sensation in her chest, a mixture of shame and fury.

He'd listened to her complain about the landlord. He'd let her rant about the rising cost of living. He'd offered her rides to the pharmacy. And all the while… the utter audacity. She sank down to the floor, the picture clutched in her hand.
