The doctor introduced them, their conditions almost the same. "Meet Mark," he said. "He understands what you're going through." Sarah flinched, as if slapped. She hadn't wanted to meet this person. She didn’t want…*this*.

She forced a weak smile, but her stomach churned. Mark offered a handshake, his eyes filled with a kind of…recognition, a terrible kind of understanding that threatened to suffocate her. She wanted to scream, to run from the sterile white room. She felt a rising panic, a frantic desire for escape. She mumbled an excuse and darted out the door, leaving the doctor and Mark to stare after her.
