The rusted metal box was unearthed in his backyard, gleaming dully in the afternoon sun. He didn't recognize it. He scanned the familiar terrain of his lawn, the swing set his children had long outgrown, the weathered oak tree he'd planted a lifetime ago, and felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. The box was not a recent addition. It looked ancient. He fumbled with the clasp, his fingers clumsy, and the sound of the metal protesting grated on his ears.

He opened it, revealing the contents: a handful of faded photographs, a diary with a lock rusted shut, and a tarnished silver locket. He picked up the locket and his breath hitched. The intricate carvings felt alien under his touch, the familiarity a phantom sensation he couldn't grasp. A dizzying wave of disorientation washed over him, and he stumbled backward.

The photos showed a younger version of himself, but the face was different somehow, less lined, less weary. Beside him stood a woman he didn't know, her smile radiant, her eyes filled with a love he couldn't place. He felt a profound sense of wrongness, an unwelcome intruder in his own life. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of something akin to panic.
