Gemotions

The archaeologists had made the discovery, and he was there as a member of the local historical society. He watched as they carefully extracted the time capsule from the earth. He was interested, but detached, until they opened it.

The contents were unsettling. There was a collection of letters, all addressed to him, but signed by someone else. There was a photograph, showing him in a setting he did not know. The landscape was alien.

He stared at the objects, his face draining of color. He felt a profound sense of wrongness, a sense of being adrift in a sea of unknowing. His hands trembled as he reached for one of the letters. He dropped it. He felt suddenly vulnerable, and wanted nothing more than to run away.
