The words felt like a physical blow. "Could I maybe plant some beans along the fence?" He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. His breath hitched in his throat.

The thought of someone *altering* the pristine, untouched border of his meticulously planned garden filled him with a sense of impending doom. He gripped his gardening trowel so hard he thought it might snap.

"I... I don't think so," he finally managed, his voice barely audible. He turned his back, abruptly ending the conversation. He had to escape, to regain control of his space.
