"Are you serious?" she asked, her voice thin, almost a whisper. The leasing agent’s cheerful explanation felt like a personal affront. She’d loved this apartment.

She walked slowly back to her unit, the elevator ride an eternity. Her hands were clammy, her heart hammered against her ribs.

Inside, she went to her window, and opened it, letting in the late afternoon air. She leaned out, the world seemed blurry and distant, the sounds of the city muffled. She wanted to scream. She wanted to throw something. Instead, she stood there, paralyzed, a sense of loss washing over her.
